AEO vs SEO vs GEO (And Why It Still SEO)

geo-vs-aeo-vs-seo

If it feels like search engines are changing faster than you can keep up, don’t worry. For most SEO specialists, that’s not even a new feeling – but if you’re already feeling the impact of AI-powered search… you’re not alone.

In just the past year, we’ve seen AI Overviews, zero-click searches, featured snippets, and even fully AI-generated results begin to reshape how information is found, and how often users click through to websites (if at all).

With that shift, a new wave of terms has entered the marketing chat:

  • SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)
  • AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation)
  • GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation)

(Honestly, that might not even be all of them, but the industry is still trying to find its new normal.) So what’s the difference between all these? Which ones should you actually care about?

In this article, we’ll break it all down, simply and clearly. You’ll learn:

  • What SEO, AEO, and GEO really mean;
  • How they connect (and how they’re different);
  • What AIO is actually referring to (hint: it’s not something you “optimize for” directly); and
  • Most importantly, how to adapt your content strategy to stay visible in a search world that’s increasingly run by AI.

Let’s start with the one most of us already know…

What Is SEO (Search Engine Optimization)? The One We All Know.

If you’re here, you likely already have an idea of what SEO – search engine optimisation – is. That said, let’s do a quick recap.

SEO is the process of optimising your website and content so that it appears higher in search engine results, like those on Google or Bing. The better your SEO, the more likely people are to discover your content when they search for something related to your brand, service, or offer.

Traditionally, SEO includes three main pillars:

  • Technical SEO (how well your website is built and loads)
  • On-page SEO (your actual content, structure, headings, and keywords)
  • Off-page SEO (links and authority-building from other websites)

The goal of SEO is, as it’s always been, to drive organic traffic to your site by matching what you’re offering (whether information, services, or products) to what users are searching for. However, as search engines like Google change their algorithm and features (such as introducing AI overviews, which we’ll cover below), SEO also evolves – and that’s exactly what we’ll be explaining.

So What Is AIO (AI Overviews)?

AIO, or AI Overviews, is a Google Search feature – one you may have encountered yourself recently. Overviews present AI-generated summaries of information related to your search; collected, curated, and presented as a concise answer to facilitate faster information discovery. It also provides a link to the sources where it found the answers to your search.

Naturally, since it aims to provide the answers you need immediately, it’s reduced the need for users to click through to websites even more than before. Between March of 2024 and 2025, zero-click searches have grown by about 11% (varying slightly by region), and it’s likely to continue this growing trend.

As you’d expect, a shift like that doesn’t come without side effects:

  • Reduced traditional clicks;
  • Changes to SEO best practices; and
  • Adaptation of content to appear in relevant zero-click searches.

It also presents an opportunity for websites and content to appear in searches they may not have appeared in before – that is, if they’re worth citing by AI Overviews. Which leads us right into:

What Is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is about making sure your content shows up when someone searches a question, and the search engine wants to give them a quick, direct answer – such as in AI Overviews.Essentially, Google or Bing will grab the answer to the user’s question and display it right there in the search results.

When we talk about optimising for zero-click search results, AEO is what we’re talking about.

To do this well, your content should:

  • Be clear and structured (use headings, bullet points, FAQs);
  • Answer specific questions people are asking thoroughly but briefly;
  • Focus on being useful and easy to understand; and
  • Build trust so search engines see your site as a reliable source.

Where it appears: Featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, and sometimes in AI Overviews.

So, if someone searches “How do I grow my Instagram audience?”, and you’ve got a step-by-step answer formatted neatly on your blog, that’s AEO in action.

What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is a bit different. Instead of helping search engines find a short answer to show on a results page, GEO helps AI tools like Google SGE (the AI ‘processor’ or LLM behind AI Overviews) or ChatGPT understand and use your content to build their own answers.

You’re not just aiming to be a snippet, but a trusted source behind the scenes.

Here’s how to do that:

  • Cover topics in more depth and context, not just summaries;
  • Make sure your writing is clear, accurate, and original;
  • Use consistent topic clusters (so your site becomes an expert in that subject); and
  • Use proper headings and structure to help AI understand your content.

Where it appears: In AI-generated responses (like AI Overviews, Copilot Answers, or ChatGPT results), where the AI might use your wording, cite your site, or reference your content.

So, if someone asks an AI tool “What’s a good marketing automation strategy?”, and it uses your blog post to help build the answer, that’s GEO in action.

Why All of This Still Falls Under SEO and Why It Matters

At this point, you might be thinking, “Okay, but is SEO still relevant if AI is answering everything for me?”

Short answer: yes. More than ever.

Let’s be clear: AEO and GEO aren’t replacements for SEO, but evolutions of it.

Just like how technical SEO, backlink strategies, or local SEO are all part of the broader SEO ecosystem, Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) are simply modern extensions shaped by how people search and how machines respond.

Here’s how it breaks down:

  • SEO is still about making sure people (and search engines) can find your content.
  • AEO is about helping your content show up as a direct answer.
  • GEO is about helping your content be used in AI-generated responses.

They all serve the same purpose: visibility. Why does it matter? Because the way people search is changing, and fast. Click-through rates (CTR) from Google have dropped by as much as 20% in some industries, as AI Overviews and instant answers take up more space on the page.

That’s not a reason to give up on SEO, but it does mean we need to adapt our approach to it.

By optimising your content for both traditional rankings and emerging answer formats, you increase the chances of appearing in AI-powered results and build brand trust even when users don’t click through.

Final Thoughts: Adapt, Don’t Panic

AEO, GEO, SEO… at the end of the day, it’s all just smart SEO.

If your content is clear, trustworthy, helpful, and technically sound, you’re already on the right path. But if you’re still writing and optimising for search the way we did five years ago, you’re going to get left behind. The goal hasn’t changed, but the way we get there has.
