Empowering Black Enterprise: Key Takeaways from the 2025 Black Business Council Summit

Black Business Council Summit 2025 (1)

Johannesburg, South Africa – The Black Business Council (BBC) hosted its impactful 2025 Annual Summit from June 5 to 6 at the Radisson OR Tambo Hotel and Convention Centre in Kempton Park. This high-level platform convened leaders from government, business, civil society, and academia to engage on the urgent need for economic transformation, inclusive growth, and policy-led collaboration.

Held under the theme: “Socio-Economic Transformation and Inclusive Growth in the context of the Government of National Unity (GNU), G20 Presidency and the Changing Geopolitical Dynamics,”

The summit provided a timely forum to interrogate South Africa’s role in shaping sustainable economic participation across all sectors.

The Summit was officially opened by BBC President Mr. Elias Monage, followed by keynote contributions from Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Mr. Ronald Lamola, Ms. Nolitha Fakude (Chairperson, Anglo American SA), Prof. Thuli Madonsela, and Prof. Bonang Mohale. These leaders underscored the urgency of unlocking opportunity for historically disadvantaged groups within the current political and economic context.

One of the most talked-about sessions was “Access to Funding for Black-, Women-, and Youth-Owned Businesses,” which showcased opportunities from institutions such as ABSA, the IDC, Nedbank, the African Export-Import Bank, and the DBSA. Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Mr. Parks Tau’s address reinforced government’s ongoing efforts to close gaps in access and inclusion.

A highlight of the summit was the emphasis on visibility for medium- and large-sized black enterprises, where exhibitors used the platform to showcase innovation, ethical business, and scale. It was a celebration of brands building authentically and growing sustainably—values that align deeply with the work of strategic agencies like Vukawanele.

“We need to focus on entrepreneurial skills,” said Mr PK Naicker of FP&M SETA, adding, “Every child needs to get to a university.” His remarks highlighted the critical link between education, enterprise, and employment readiness.

Mr Mothibi Ramusi, Chairperson of ICASA, also advocated for linguistic and cultural inclusion in content creation: “You need to take care of all 12 languages when it comes to local content for sustainable growth.”

Vukawanele’s Strategic Visibility at the Summit

Among the exhibitors was Vukawanele, a proudly black female-led agency that works across digital, strategic, and development marketing and communications. The agency used the platform to engage with fellow entrepreneurs, showcase its latest campaigns, and elevate the conversation around inclusive communications and technology adoption.

As part of the summit’s post-panel reflections, CEO Sne Vilakazi was interviewed live to share insights on the significance of platforms like the BBC Summit.

“We need to show young people that entrepreneurship is a valid, thriving path — especially when we combine it with emerging technologies like AI,” Vilakazi shared. “While many will be employed, some must be encouraged to build. AI can scale our capacity, but it can’t replace our humanity. That’s where the opportunity lies — in working alongside it.”

The interview formed part of a broader media effort to capture stakeholder insights, reflections, and solutions-driven perspectives from summit participants, affirming Vukawanele’s growing influence in shaping how transformation is communicated and experienced.

As the summit concluded, one thing was clear: economic inclusion demands more than policy; it requires consistent visibility, collaborative action, and authentic storytelling. Vukawanele remains committed to helping brands and institutions bridge purpose and performance — and to building a communications ecosystem that drives real, measurable impact.
